I feel for you. It reminds me of when my sister's stapler broke... some background on the stapler: We're a supplies family--my sister had the stapler obsession, and for me it was the tape and stapler. When buying bags, we had to make sure the stapler fit in there before buying it. One day, my sister's stapler broke. We were lost for that day; we used it for everything--mending clothes, wrapping gifts, securing shoes, opening packages, sometimes actually stapling paper. We borrowed the neighbour's stapler, but it wasn't the same. Being as anal as we are, we still had the box (8 years we had this), and it was still under warranty, so we called the number and sent in the stapler. They sent us back a new, but extremely crappy stapler that only looked like the old great stapler. It just wasn't the same and has never been. I feel for your ruler. Yes, my family is nuts, but only slightly :-p
